Records Fall at Australian Masters

Records Fall at Australian Masters

24th February 2012: The records have been tumbling at the 2012 Cycling Australia Masters Track National Championships at Sydney's Dunc Gray Velodrome.

In the Menís Masters 6 category, Steve Darracott (Hunter District CC) was just 0.6 of a second outside the World Best Time, crossing the line in 2:24.482 to break the Australian record in qualifying.

Darracott was just as dominant in the final, catching opponent Michael Lawson of Queensland before powering to take the gold medal in 2:24.585. Anton Wurzer (Vikings Cycling Club (ACT) took the bronze medal.

David Stevens (Randwick Botany CC) set an Australian Championship record of 3:29.888 in the Menís Masters 4 category 3000m qualifying, taking a whopping 3.5 seconds off the previous record. In the final, Stevens posted 3:32.477 to take gold over Scott Butler (Illawarra CC) who posted 3:34.378, with Tony Simonelli (3:42.749) taking the bronze.

In the women's 1 category, Clare Mandeno smashed the previous Australian Championship and All Comers records in the 2000m event, posting a scintillating time of 2:42.417, eleven seconds better than the previous mark.

Jayne Paine from London's Willesden Cycling Club set a new Australian Championship record in the Womenís Masters 4 2000m event with a time of 2:41.423 taking 3.2 seconds off the twelve-year-old Championship record. She defeated Julie Barnett (Gold Coast Goldstars) who recorded 2:47.711.

The race of the day was undoubtedly the Menís Masters 3 3000m gold medal final between the HPRW - Mainline Racing pair of Andrew Gerber and Andrew Patten.

Gerber bolted from the blocks to establish a handy lead after the first kilometre, but by the halfway mark, Gerber had Patten in his sights on the straight and look to pass his opponent.

However, with Gerber fading and Patten finding his second wind, Patten levelled the race with just two laps remaining, finishing strongly over the final few hundreds to cross the line in 3:32.477, taking the gold over Gerber 3:34.378.

Tony Simonelli (Ipswich CC) took the bronze medal (3:42.749).

In other events, Glenn Stojanow (3:34.949) took gold in the Masters 1 event, with Ipswich's Adam Simonelli (3:36.408) too good for Tasmania's Rob Carlisle (3:36.818) in the second category.

Michael Poppelwell (Randwick Botany CC) posted (2:23.129) to claim the Master's 5 gold over Nicholas Chadderton (Hawthorn CC) who recorded 2:25.087 for the 2000m event. Lewis Marshall (Rockhampton CC) won bronze.

Richard Spinks (Northern Suburbs CC) was equally as superb in his Masters 9 final victory over Alban McGuinness (Waratah Masters CC). Spinks' (2:49.651) was too good for McGuinness' (2:58.132).

In the women's finals, Rebecca Wheadon (Roues Chaudes Club de Cyclage) took the Masters 2 gold with 2:37.162 over Sandra Bletchly's (Wynnum Redlands CC) 2:38.735.

Michelle Crawford (Goulburn CC) blitzed all that came before her in the Master's 3 category, dominating the final over Janelle Smith (Southern Tasmania CC). Crawford (2:35.105) finished thirteen seconds ahead of Smith (2:48.386). Catherine Hootton (Illawarra CC) claimed bronze.

Donna Meehan (Lidcombe Auburn CC) took the gold in the Masters 5 event in 2:46.081, with Marion Renshaw (Bathurst CC) time of 2:55.750 secured her the Masters 6 silver medal, with Meriel Custance (3:02.329) taking bronze.

Gaye Lynn (Sutherland Shire CC) took gold in the Masters 7 event with 2:50.074 and Rosemary Hastings (Bathurst CC) took Masters 8 bronze with a time of 2:59.814.
