Fantastic Finale for World Cup Series

Fantastic Finale for World Cup Series

21st February 2012: The 2011-2012 UCI World Cup presented by Samsung reached its zenith in London’s new velodrome, where the fourth and final round, which also served as a test event for the upcoming Olympic Games, ended as expected with victory for the British team. In the overall rankings for the series, Germany won with 291 points, thanks largely to wins in Astana and Cali. Defending World Cup holders France came second with 247 points, ahead of Australia with 241.

The final assessment of the competitions held in the British capital, where cycling’s popularity continues to grow, was extremely positive. The quality of the facilities that will host the Olympic events, the excellent arrangements made by LOCOG and the unique atmosphere of this weekend’s competitions in the velodrome give the best possible guarantee of success for the six days that will be devoted to the Olympic track programme.

Sir Chris Hoy was the hero of the day once again, never failing to draw the enthusiasm of the crowd. Having already won the keirin, the triple Olympic champion from Beijing also flew to victory in the sprint tournament, seeing off Grégory Baugé of France first, followed by German riders Maximilan Levy and Robert Förstemann. As this was his second win of the season, the first being in Astana, the Scotsman also took first place in the final overall World Cup rankings for the event.

Another key moment of the afternoon was the highly anticipated duel between the two best men’s pursuit teams. The Australian team comprising Jack Bobridge, Rohan Dennis, Michael Hepburn and newcomer Alexander Edmondson, the Junior World Champion, gradually broke down the British team’s resistance, ending almost two seconds ahead. But we have not seen the last of them, and we can look forward to a repeat encounter at the UCI World Championships in Melbourne, followed of course by the Olympic Games.

The final two titles to be awarded in the women’s competition went to Sarah Hammer and Simona Krupeckaite. The American rider won the omnium ahead of Annette Edmondson of Australia and Laura Trott of Great Britain, while Li Huang of China finished at the top of the overall rankings for the event, and the Lithuanian cyclist confirmed her lead in the keirin, pushing her wheel over the line ahead of Wai Sze Lee of Hong Kong – a late revelation in the sprint events – and Guo Shuang of China.

The 2011-2012 UCI Track World Cup presented by Samsung has concluded its journey with an intense few days in the splendid Olympic showcase of London, providing a delicious foretaste of the sumptuous spectacle this discipline will offer, as it does every four years, at the Olympic Games.

In the meantime, don’t miss the 2012 UCI Track World Championships, which open in Melbourne, Australia, on 4 April.
